Today, we honor Janis Joplin

Imprisoned

A Short Story by Sam Curtin of Chronicles of an Anthropology Nerd

Annie sat on the hard, dirty, stone floor, wrists chained to the wall and raised above her head. They had stripped her of her clothes and wrapped her in a dirty, blood stained beige sheet. Her body was covered in bruises and blood now stained her face. On the inside of her elbow was a bruise where they had injected her.

She had no idea why she was here or what they wanted with her. They had already beaten the shit out of her, prodded her, stuck her, and cut her. They had done a live autopsy on her, and she could still feel the cut down her chest, though it was already healing.

For once in her life, her whole entire existence, she wished that she were mortal. She wished that they would just kill her already, instead of putting her through all this agony. She just hung there limply not moving a muscle; her eyes were closed. She was still conscious, and she remained that way during everything they had done to her.

Her feet were folded under her and her head drooped down onto her chest causing her matted light red hair to fall over her face. She couldn’t even hold her head up she was so weak. Blood dripped from the closing wound on her cheek, unto the dirty floor. She heard movement outside her cell and hushed voices but no one ever came in.

Her stomach ached for food and water but she would never starve or dehydrate. Her ribs were starting to protrude out and her skin clung to her bones. She felt her organs digesting themselves inside of her and she knew she would be alive through it all. She was completely stationary with the exception of her brain that kept constantly reminding her that she was suffering. Her heart beat over and over, mockingly in her chest.

The cell was pitch-black except for the light filtering through the window on the cell door. There were no windows in the cell itself, and the air was stale with the smell of death twisting through it.
She could heal herself little by little, but it was slower than she usually healed. This was most likely because she had been repeatedly attacked. She’d never felt this helpless before. She had always been strong, had not needed anyone. She had always been able to save herself. Now she wanted a knight in shining armor to come and rescue her. He didn’t even have to be a knight, or a he for that matter, as long as someone saved her from this eternal suffering.

She heard footsteps down the hall coming closer and closer. They stopped in front of her door. There was a pause, then a deafening bang, and then just silence. That was followed by the sound of the key in the lock. The door then swung open on its hinges and Annie prepared herself for another beating. As she lifted her head up the little that she could, she saw that it was not one of them. She saw the bottom of the familiar black coat, and she let out an inaudible sigh.

She heard the jingle of keys and then felt him unlocking the shackles off of her wrists. They fell off and her arms fell limply beside her. She fell over since the chains were the only things holding her upright. He then scooped her up, putting one of his muscular arms under her thighs and the other under her back. He carried her out of the cell and she barely opened her eyes to see the guards lying dead on the floor. She closed her eyes once more and sighed quietly as she was carried out of the hell she had grown accustomed to.
